Weekly Update

Hello Everyone,

It's conference week! Please be sure to show up with your child at your scheduled time this week. If you need a reminder of your time, just let me know. Please be sure your child knows how he or she is going home each day.

The book fair is going on this week. You are free to shop with your child before or after your conference time, or you can send in money with your child to spend on his or her own during the day. If you send in money, please put it in an envelope or baggie with your child's name on it.

This week, there are no spelling words to study! We will be practicing spelling sight words that are often misspelled (because, there, were, where, went, want, now, know, are, our, etc), but there will not be a test on these words.

We will be introducing some new concepts this week as we start the 2nd quarter. Our reading and writing focus for most of the quarter will be on Informational (non-fiction) texts. In reading, we will practice asking and answering questions based on non-fiction texts. Our goal is to refer to the text when answering questions and to make sure we use complete sentences in our answers. This is a tough skill, but I've seen a lot of progress already this year in how students answer questions after reading!

In writing, we will eventually be conducting research and writing an essay based on the facts we find. For this week, we will complete a short informational writing telling facts about a monster that each student will create. This will be a great introduction to this new type of writing.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to email me at laura.kloos@cobbk12.org.
