Science Fair packets went home last Thursday. Projects are due in January. I would love to have several students participate in this event! Talk to your child and see if he or she is interested. Go to https://www.sciencebuddies.org/ for some project ideas. If you need another information packet, let me know!

The second quarter is wrapping up this week. When report cards are complete, they will be posted online. No paper copies will be coming home as they have in previous years. You will need to login to Parent Vue to access your child's report card. Here is the link to Parent Vue https://parentvue.cobbk12.org/ If you have not registered, you will need to come in to the office to get your account set up. It takes less than 5 minutes. Report cards will be posted January 10th.

Our holiday party is this Thursday. I wanted to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who signed up to bring in supplies! The party is going to be GREAT! Feel free to send in the supplies whenever you're ready.

3rd Grade Performance, Thursday, December 5th

The Addison 3rd graders will be presenting the musical “FLAKES" at the PTA/Foundation meeting THIS Thursday, December 5, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. in the Addison cafĂ©. Students should report to their classrooms NO EARLIER THAN 5:30 p.m. and should be dressed in their assigned costume.
Snowflake – The basic costume is a white sweat suit with a large snowflake attached to the front of the top. However, you could get as elaborate as you want as long as you stay with all white top and bottom and a snowflake attached to the front of the top.
Snirts – The basic costume is a gray sweat suit. However, you could get as elaborate as you want as long as you stay with an all gray top and bottom. Face should be smudged with some brown makeup to look like dirt.

We will be performing for the student body at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 5th. For this performance students should wear this year's STEM t-shirt, blue jeans and comfortable shoes. If your child doesn't have this year's STEM tee, then any Addison t-shirt or a plain green t-shirt will be okay.

Weekly Update

Hello Third Grade Families,

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! It's hard to believe we have just 3 weeks until our December break. Please take a moment to save these important dates:

PTA/Foundation Meeting--3rd grade performs December 5th, 6:00pm
Holiday Shoppe December 7th
Early Release December 19th and 20, 12:15 pm
Winter Holidays-School Closed
December 23rd - January 1st
Students return on January 6th

As you can see, our big 3rd grade performance is this Thursday! Dr. Sampson will be giving out more information this week. If you have immediate questions, her email is michele.sampson@cobbk12.org.

Here's a look at our ELA learning this week:

In both reading and writing, we will be focusing on compare & contrast. In reading, we will focus on finding similarities and differences in the text we read. In writing, we will write about the similarities and differences of two similar topics (like butterflies and moths, for example). We will learn that there are specific words that authors use to signal a comparison. Hopefully, the students will begin using these phrases in their own writing too.

As always, please let me or Mrs. Westbrook know if you have any questions or concerns. I can't wait to see everyone!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Hello Third Grade Families,

Yesterday your child brought home an orange Thanksgiving reading challenge. I'm hoping for 100% participation in this reading challenge during the break. Please keep these papers in a safe place next week and return them by Wednesday, December 4th. Students will earn extra dojo points if they complete the challenge! Several students are borrowing books from my own personal class library collection to take home during the break so they have something to read. Please remind your child to return these books after the break. Happy Reading!

Also, today your child is bringing home a fun Thanksgiving narrative writing that we started in class. Students have the option of finishing this writing piece during the break and returning it on Monday, December 2nd for bonus dojo points. These stories should have a beginning, middle, and end and also include descriptions of feelings, actions, thoughts and even some dialogue! Today, we talked about editing our writing and how it is perfectly normal to make mistakes, but it's not ok to ignore those mistakes once you find them. We had fun jumping up and down and shouting, "I made a mistake!" The students did a great job of finding and correcting their errors. (and it was pretty fun to watch!)

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving! As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you,
Laura Kloos

Weekly Update

Hello Third Grade Families,

I hope everyone can join us this Wednesday, November 20 at 11:50 for the Thanksgiving lunch. Also, don't forget, there is NO SCHOOL November 25-29.

Here's a look at our learning this week:

In reading, we will be learning how authors use cause & effect to connect sentences and paragraphs in the text. We will learn that there are certain key words that signal a cause or an effect. As your child reads at home, see if he or she can find these key words and identify some causes & effect in their text.

In writing, we will be putting the final touches on our non-fiction animal books. The students have all done a great job adding text features to their books. Each student will present their book to the class this week.

We will wrap up our grammar unit on verbs this week by learning about subject/verb agreement.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about anything.

Thank you!
