Please be sure your child knows how he or she is getting home this Wednesday since it is an early release day. If there is a change in your child's regular transportation, please send in a note with your child.

Here's a look at our learning this week in ELA:

In reading, we will revisit the skill of using context clues to understand the meaning of unknown words. This is a crucial skill when it comes to reading comprehension. If your child gets to an unknown word when reading at home, instead of just telling what the words means, encourage him or her to look for clues right before or after the word to help decide what it means. We will be reading about the respiratory and circulatory systems this week as part of our health standards. The complicated vocabulary we encounter while reading about these systems will require us to practice our context clues!

In writing, we will switch back to writing narratives, or stories with characters, a setting, dialogue, and sequence. We will read a short incomplete story and then add a middle and ending to it. We will focus on using dialogue with the characters in the story.

Our grammar focus will be on how to correctly punctuate dialogue. This is a tough skill for 3rd graders. Knowing where to put the commas can be tricky! Have your child go on a dialogue hunt in a book this week and encourage them to pay attention to how the punctuation is used in the dialogue. Please remember to keep reading every night. Consistent daily reading is one of the best ways to improve reading skills. If your child does not have anything to read at home, please let me know and I'll make sure they bring something home to read.

Here's a look at our learning in reading, writing, and grammar this week:

In reading, we will continue working on understanding the sequence of events in a text. We've been creating timelines based on the book, The Wild Robot. To practice this skill at home, ask your child questions about a book he or she is reading such as, "What happened right before or just after (insert an event from the book)?"

In writing, we will wrap up our work on opinion writing with a fun piece about indoor vs outside recess. We will read two short passages about recess and then form our own opinion about which type of recess is better.

We will wrap up our unit on conjunctions this week as well. As your child reads or writes at home, ask him or her if can find any conjunctions. Here is a link to several conjunction games for extra practice. https://www.turtlediary.com/games/conjunction.html

Hello Third Grade Families!

I hope everyone enjoyed the extra time with your kids last week! I'm excited to see everyone bright and early tomorrow at Addison. We have a fun week planned!

Here's a look at our learning this week in ELA:

In reading, we will be learning about timelines. We will be using timelines of the early explorers lives to help us practice this skill. At home, students might have fun creating a timeline of their own lives. I'd love to see one if your child decides to make their own!

In writing, we will continue to focus on opinion writing. We will read two short texts and then form an opinion based on what we read. Then we will write about our opinions using reasons and examples.

Our grammar focus this week will continue with conjunctions. We will learn more about subordinating conjunctions and how to use them in our writing.

Please remember to turn in the pink reading challenge that was sent home last Friday. It is due on Wednesday.

Weekly Update

Hello Third Grade Families,

I hope everyone enjoyed the surprise snow day! My family and I definitely did!

Here's a look at our learning in ELA this week:

In reading, we will continue our unit on comparing and contrasting. Students should be able to compare the characters, setting, plot and theme of two stories. We will use the books Jumanji and Zathura by Chris Van Allsburg to help us practice this skill this week.

In writing, we will finish typing our final draft of our opinion piece. We are also working on editing as we type the final drafts.

We will begin to learn about conjunctions this week.

Don't forget that we will be exchanging valentines this Friday at school. There are 22 students in our class. A list of names went home to make sure no one is forgotten. Let me know if you need another copy. Students are welcome to bring a decorated box or bag to collect their goodies.

Weekly Update

Happy Super Bowl Sunday!

Please save the following dates on your calendars:

Spring Picture Day	February 4th
Progress Reports go Home	February 13th
February Break-School Closed	February 17th-21st

As you can see, Picture Day is this Tuesday. All students will be in our class picture. Individual pictures will only be taken if you pre-pay. Our picture time is not until late in the day (after P.E., lunch, and recess), so if there is something special you want your child to wear, I don't mind if you send in their picture clothing for them to change into before pictures. 

Here's a look at our learning this week:

In reading, we will begin working on comparing and contrasting story elements. We will first review what the story elements characters, setting, and plot are. We will also learn about the theme of a story. Once we've reviewed all of these elements, we will begin comparing them between different stories. At home, ask your child to think about two books he or she has read recently and how they are the same and different.

In writing, we will continue working on our evidence-based opinion piece. Ask your child about the topic he or she chose. I'm hoping that we will type a final draft at the end of the week.
