Here's a look at our learning this week:

In writing, we will continue working on a compare and contrast informational piece we began last week. Once we finish writing our rough draft, we hope to type a final copy on the computer to help with typing skills.

Our grammar focus this week will be pronoun/antecedent agreement. 

In reading, we will focus on comparing and contrasting two texts. We will look for these clue words as we're reading to help identify similarities and differences in our texts.

In social studies, we will learn about productive resources. Students will learn about natural, human, and capital resources as well as entrepreneurship. 

In math, we will continue our work on multiplication and division word problems. Students should be reading the problems slowly and picturing what's happening. Then they should determine if they need to find the total (multiplication) or if they already know the total (division). Weekly Update

Hello Third Grade Families! I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I'm excited to see everyone back at school tomorrow. 

**Please remember to return the yellow reading challenge sheet by Wednesday. I can send another home if needed.

**Also, we will be visiting the science lab tomorrow (Monday) and will need various natural items from your yard. Items might include pine straw, sticks, rocks, etc. Please send the items in a gallon sized bag or a grocery bag. Thank you for your help with gathering supplies!

Here's a look at our learning this week:

In grammar, we will be learning about subject/verb agreement. Here's a game to practice this skill http://www.abcya.com/subject_verb_agreement.htm. 

We will also begin a new informative writing piece this week. We will be integrating what we're learning in geography this week with our writing skills. The students will be comparing two major U.S. rivers in their writing. They will be writing about the similarities and differences between the two rivers chosen. We will not start this until Wednesday. Be sure to ask your child which rivers your child is writing about.

In reading, we will be learning how authors use cause & effect in their writing. There are causes and effects happening all day long in the world around us. Ask your child to find examples in his or her own life. For example, a cause could be leaving your shoes untied, and the effect would be tripping. We will be exploring several examples in various texts we will read this week.

In social studies, we will be working on our geography standards. We will be learning about the 2 major mountain ranges and 6 major rivers of the United States. We will work on locating these on a map. The rivers third graders need to identify are the Mississippi, Ohio, Rio Grande, Colorado, Hudson, and St. Lawrence. 

In math, we will finish up our unit on finding the area of a rectangle (multiply length times width). Then we will practice solving multiplication and division word problems. We are continuing to work on memorizing multiplication facts. If you need ideas for how to practice at home, please let me know.

Here's a look at our learning this week:

In ELA/Writing, students will be presenting their informational books which were finished last week. We will work on speaking with loud, clear voices and speaking at an appropriate speed during these presentations. We will also complete a fun Thanksgiving narrative writing.

In reading, we will focus on the comprehension skill of sequencing. We will use some non-fiction texts to help us with this skill. We will work on identifying key words and phrases which signal order of events in a text. 

In social studies, we will continue learning about the similarities and differences between various American Indian regions in the United States. Our field trip on Thursday will give us an up-close and personal experience of Native American life! We will also be spending some time in the Learning Commons (library) as we make an info-graphic that teaches about the American Indian regions.

In math, we will begin a new unit on finding the area of a square or rectangle. We will begin by tiling square units over a rectangle and counting how many squares it takes to cover the entire object. Then, we will learn the traditional formula of Area = length x width.

Don't forget our field trip is this Thursday. Please have your child wear his or her gray & white Addison shirt for this event.

Please be on the look-out for a Thanksgiving reading challenge sheet coming home this week. Keep it in a safe place, so it can be returned after the break. We are hoping for 100% participation from our class. There is a contest between classes to see who can have the most participation =)

Here's a look at our learning this week:

In writing and language arts, we will be turning our informative writing into a book! The students will use their rough draft as a guide to type a final draft. They will also be adding text features. We can't wait to see how these turn out! We will continue our work with verbs and verb tenses this week. We will work on irregular past tense verbs.

In reading, we will continue working with text features. We will focus on understanding how text features can help us understand what we're reading. 

In social studies, we will learn more about different regions of American Indians. As we learn about each region, we are comparing the types of food, clothing, and shelter used.

In math, we will continue learning about the properties of multiplication and how these properties can help us solve various multiplication problems.

Homework: Spelling words will be written in agendas Monday morning. Please study these words in preparation for Friday's quiz. Math homework will go home Monday to be returned by Friday. Please remember students should be showing their work when necessary. Students should be reading at least 20 minutes every night. If you are having trouble finding the right book, let me know and we can get something worked out.

Don't forget, there is NO SCHOOL on Tuesday!

Tuesday, November 6th - Election Day - Student Holiday 

Monday, November 12th - 8:15am - Internet Safety Info Session - Patti Agatston will be coming to Addison to share information about cyber bullying, phone, and internet safety for parents when it comes to staying vigilant with your kids and their phone and internet usage. 

Wednesday, November 14th - Thanksgiving Lunch for 3rd & 4th grade

Monday, November 19th - Friday, November 23rd - Thanksgiving Break 

Tuesday, November 27th - 6:00pm - A second meeting with Patti Agatston is being held. Please keep in mind that these meetings are meant for adults only. 

Here's a look at our learning this week:

In writing, we will continue using our research from last week as we write an informative piece. We are working on separating our writing into paragraphs that each begin with a topic sentence. In grammar, we will review what students have previously learned about verbs and begin to work on past tense verbs.

In reading, we will learn all about text features. We will not only identify text features, but also learn how these text features help us understand what we're reading. We will use non-fiction texts to help us with this skill. If you have non-fiction books at home, encourage your child to talk about the text features found.

In social studies, we are beginning a brand new unit on American Indians. For the next few weeks, we will learn about the history and culture of 6 different American Indian regions. Ask your child which regions we're learning about this week.

In math, we will spend the beginning of the week learning about multiplying & dividing by 4. Then we will learn about different properties of multiplication. We are continuing to take multiplication timed test each week. Ask your child which times table he or she should be practicing for the week.

I hope everyone had a great weekend! It's finally feeling like Fall! With the cooler weather comes the inevitable loss of coats and jackets. Please write your child's name in his or her jacket so we can help get things back to the correct person.

Red Ribbon Week is a national event that promotes drug awareness and prevention each year. At Addison, we use this week to encourage our students to make good choices. We hope you will support us in celebrating happy, healthy choices at home! J

Monday – “Make a pledge Monday!”  –   Students will sign class pledge to show that they pledge to live a healthy life! Students will receive red ribbon stickers and pencils.

Tuesday – “Color my life drug free” – Students will receive a Red Ribbon Week coloring sheet. 

Wednesday – “Wear Red Wednesday!”  Wear red to support a healthy life!

Thursday – “Healthy Snack Day” –  Students will bring a healthy item to eat during snack.

Friday – “Team up against drugs!”- Wear your favorite team gear or Addison spirit wear.

Here's a look at our learning this week:

In writing, we will continue our work with informative writing. The students will begin researching and planning for a new piece on the topic of his or her choice. This week we will focus on how to organize all these facts we will find during our research.

In reading, we will continue our work on identifying the main idea and details of a text. We will focus mostly on non-fiction texts as we practice this skill. 

If you're looking for a little extra reading comprehension practice, here's a link to an online non-fiction reading passage with a comprehension quiz. This is not required. https://www.ereadingworksheets.com/reading-comprehension-worksheets/tetris/

In science, we will continue our work on weathering, erosion, and fossils. Students should know the following:

• how water & wind can change rocks & soil over time
• how fossils serve as evidence of past organisms & the environment in which they lived
• the sequence of how an organism becomes fossilized

In math, we will continue working on multiplication fact fluency. Some students will continue practicing multiplying by 2s, 5s, and 10s. Others will move on to learning the 3s and 4s this week. Here are some helpful tricks to learning how to count and multiply by different numbers.

We will have an author visit on Thursday. George O'Conner will hold presentations throughout the day for each grade. https://www.georgeoconnorbooks.com/

Homework: Weekly math homework will come home on Monday to be turned in by Friday. Spelling words will be written in agendas on Monday and should be studied in preparation for Friday's quiz. Students should be reading for at least 20 minutes per night. Please log your minutes on biblionasium.

Remember if there is a transportation change, it must be in writing.
